This 1973 Jaguar XJ6 was sold new by Charles Hornburg Jr. Motor Cars of Beverly Hills, California, and a Jaguar four-speed manual transmission and a triple-SU-carburetor setup for the 4.2-liter inline-six are said to have been installed by the car’s second owner decades ago. The third owner lived in San Diego, California, and eventually moved the car to Wisconsin, where the seller acquired the sedan out of long-term storage as a non-running project in 2021. The fuel system, carburetors, intake manifold, and valve covers subsequently were refurbished, and other work involved removing smog equipment and the fuel cooler, fitting Euro-spec headlights and taillamps, installing Series 1 bumper overriders, adding headliner-supporting wood strips and racing-style air filters, and replacing both fuel pumps, the clutch master cylinder, and the tires. Finished in Pale Primrose over tan leather upholstery, the car is also equipped with chrome-finished 15″ steel wheels, hubcaps, power steering, power-assisted disc brakes, a limited-slip differential, burl walnut interior trim, an AM/FM/cassette stereo, power windows, and chrome bumpers. This modified XJ6 is now offered at no reserve with manufacturer’s literature, a service manual, spare and removed parts, a replacement front-end kit, a blue California license plate, and a clean Wisconsin title in the seller’s name.
The headlights and taillamps were converted to Euro-spec items by the seller, the “Series 1.5″ factory-installed bumper hoops were replaced with Series 1 overriders, and the passenger-side Leaper ornament was replaced. Dual exhaust outlets protrude from the rear valance, and the car also has dual fuel fillers. The seller notes that the trim is missing from the windshield and the rear window and that the right-side inner headlight is inoperable. Rust is noted at the lower rear corner of the passenger-side front door, and there is a rust pinhole near the center of the hood. Chips, touch-ups, and dings in the Pale Primrose paint are visible.
Accompanying paperwork shows that the car was registered to the included blue California license plate in August 1973. The most recent registration sticker on the plate expired in 1989.
Chrome-finished 15″ wheels wear Jaguar-logo hubcaps and are wrapped in 215/70 whitewall tires. Braking is provided by power-assisted discs at each corner; the seller has bled the brakes. The steering also is power assisted. The seller states that the tires were replaced in October 2024 (less than 200 miles ago), and the front shock bushings have been replaced as well.
The cabin features front bucket seats and a rear bench upholstered in tan leather along with a color-coordinated center console, door panels, carpeting, and floor mats. Burl-walnut veneer trim accents the dashboard, and additional appointments include an AM/FM/cassette stereo, power antenna, a locking glovebox, power windows, and front shoulder belts. The air conditioning and the heater are inoperable, and the driver’s seatbelt no longer retracts. The dashboard is cracked, and the upholstery exhibits wear.
A leather-wrapped two-spoke steering wheel fronts a 140-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 5k-rpm redline. Additional instrumentation located centrally on the dashboard is composed of a clock and gauges displaying voltage, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer indicates 80k miles, approximately 300 of which were added under current ownership. The seller states that the steering wheel is not centered but the car tracks straight; replacement ball joints and tie-rod ends are included in the sale.
The seller installed steamed wood strips on the ceiling to help support the headliner.
The 4.2-liter inline-six has been updated with XKE-sourced triple SU carburetors that were adapted in place of the original twin carburetors by a previous owner. Work performed under current ownership is said to have included:
Rebuilding the SU carburetors and polishing many components
Installing chrome-mesh racing-style 3″ air filters with custom spacers
Removing and polishing the intake manifold
Replacing the intake-manifold gaskets and brass intake nuts
Checking valve clearance
Refurbishing the valve covers and replacing their gaskets and decals
Draining/flushing and treating both fuel tanks with rust-preventative product
Replacing both fuel pumps
Replacing all fuel lines in the trunk
Installing serviceable in-line fuel filters
Replacing most soft fuel lines in the engine bay
Removing the factory air-intake box and hot-air crossover tube
Removing exhaust-manifold heat shielding and crossover-tube ducting
Removing the air-pump/smog system and plugging injection ports with brass fittings
Removing the air-conditioning line and fuel cooler
Replacing the thermostat housing, thermostat, and gaskets
Replacing engine decals
Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission that reportedly was sourced from a Jaguar XKE or Mk X and was fitted by a previous owner many years ago in place of the original Borg-Warner automatic transmission. The rear end houses a limited-slip differential. The clutch master cylinder was replaced under current ownership. Corrosion is noted on the underbody, and the seller states that the car leaks oil.
Manufacturer’s literature, 1973 sales documents, two Customer Identification Plates, and service references will accompany the vehicle along with a collection of removed parts including the air-filter housing, headlights and headlight buckets, taillight lenses, and A/C hose with fuel cooler. Replacement upper and lower ball joints and outer tie-rod ends also will convey with the vehicle.
