Auction description:
1974 Jaguar XJ6 Series 2 LWB Saloon
Extensively refurbished example of this early classic Seventies saloon
Supplied with original books and purchase receipts
From a private NSW Jaguar collection
Offered with No Reserve
Chassis no. 2T4283BW
Engine no. 8L37486L (see text)
Supplied with a good history file (including an original Operating, Maintenance and Service Handbook in the plastic wallet), this lovely XJ6 LWB saloon was originally sold through Victorian dealers Kellow-Falkiner Pty Ltd to Potter & Holmes Pty Ltd of Chapel Street, Prahran in September 1974, the purchase receipt noting the original colours of white with russet trim. Judging by old registration papers the original owners kept the car well into the 1980s.
Purchased by the late owner from a Sydney dealer in 2002 with 14,795 kms showing on the clock (presumably having been around once), the XJ6 has been in his collection for the longest period of any of the cars offered here. Maintained by marque specialist Graeme Lord for many years, copious receipts on file attest to the owner’s diligence in keeping the Jaguar in excellent mechanical condition over the years. The car remained on full NSW registration until 2017 and on club plates thereafter.
Evidently the car was beginning to show its age in recent years and the XJ6 underwent significant body repairs and a full repaint in the original white duco approximately four years ago, along with a large quantity of new parts and trim pieces. A set of red leather front and rear seats purchased back in 2016 has been partially installed (the rear seat would still appear to be the original) while a replacement 4.2-litre engine complete with SU carburettors was sourced in 2020. A large quantity of left over XJ6 parts will be sold as a separate lot.
As a result the XJ6 presents in very good external condition, the duco free of any major blemishes, excellent chrome and brightwork and good panel fit and finish. The interior appears to be a mix of new and original parts: as mentioned the rear bench seat appears to be the original whereas the front seats are upholstered in a darker red leather with relatively little wear evident. The dash pad isn’t cracked but the timber veneer on the dash has delaminated, notably around the glovebox. The centre console has been replaced and a vintage-style radio installed, while the carpets have some wear in places but are presentable enough. There is an original tool kit and roll for the jack in the boot and a strong history file supplied with the car. The Jaguar started easily and performed well on a short drive, with no obvious issues to report and will make a lovely club car.
Showing 61,672 kms on the clock at the time of cataloguing, the Jaguar will be sold unregistered and with No Reserve. Please note the car is located in Berridale, NSW and must be collected on site by arrangement with Donington Auctions.
Winning bid: $4,900
