Gunmetal Grey
Blue 5.3L V12
VIN 1P1544BW
Lot #24971
private Sale
Halifax, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom
This Jaguar XJ12 is a rare short-wheelbase example of Jaguar’s flagship 1970s saloon car, powered by a smooth V12.
Under the bonnet sits the naturally aspirated 5.3-litre V12, driving the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission.
This XJ12 V12 was treated to a £2,500 service in August 2023, which included replacing the engine oil, spark plugs, and water pump.
EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES
Originally specified in Lavender Blue with a Dark Blue leather-trimmed cabin, this XJ12 was treated to a glass and engine-out respray under previous ownership in its current hue of Gunmetal Grey, and the cabin is now trimmed in black leather.
It rides on a set of 15-inch wheels with polished covers, shod with Goodyear tyres.
Equipment includes a full-length fabric Webasto sunroof, a Radiomobile eight-track player, and a row of rocker switches including controls for the twin fuel tanks.
Accompanying the sale is a Heritage Certificate and various paperwork.
CONDITION
The seller reports that the Webasto opening roof requires a new headliner and that the seats require attention.
Due to its age, the car is now exempt from mandatory MOT testing. However, the most recent MOT test was conducted on 26 October 2022 at 81,043 miles, resulting in a clean first-time pass.
SERVICE HISTORY
The car was last serviced in August 2023, which included replacing the engine oil, spark plugs, and water pump.
The seller states that receipts accompany the vehicle for previous work, including an engine-out service, the replacement of the fuel tanks, and work on the suspension and differential.

Seller's description:
1973 Jaguar XJ12 V12 Series 1
83,393 Miles (Indicated)
automatic
RHD
Gunmetal Grey Metallic
Dark Blue
5.3L V12
VIN1P1544BW
Vehicle is company-registered
This short-wheelbase Jaguar XJ12 Series 1 is a rare and elegant classic British luxury saloon, which is reported to be one of only 720 right-hand drive examples produced.
It is powered by the naturally aspirated 5.3-litre V12 engine, driving the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission.
This XJ12 is believed to be one of only 348 right-hand drive SWB examples from the 1973 model year, and is car number 544 of the 720 total RHD SWB XJ12s built. It was first registered in May 1973.
The odometer indicates 83,393 miles, though this is not warranted.
EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES
This XJ12 Series 1 was originally finished in Lavender Blue, but is now presented with a sophisticated Gunmetal Grey Metallic colour scheme, over a Dark Blue leather-trimmed interior, featuring a black dashboard and transmission tunnel, a wood veneer dashboard inlay, textured metal inlays on the centre console, and chrome trim highlights.
It rides on a set of 15-inch steel wheels with chrome hubcaps, fitted with Goodyear Viva tyres.
Equipment includes a full-length Webasto sunroof, a two-spoke steering wheel, heater and ventilation controls, electric windows, Smiths gauges, a Kienzle analogue clock, a Radiomobile stereo, and push-out front quarter light windows.
The car comes with a selection of documentation, including past registration records, Jaguar Heritage Trust production trace certificates, the V5C, service information, and MOT certificates.
One ignition key is included.
CONDITION
Specific notes from the seller include: the Gunmetal Grey repaint from 1998 is noted to show signs of wear, including some paint bubbles visible near the Webasto roof and on the top of the bonnet. Inside, the leather upholstery presents with age-related blemishes and cracking, and the headlining will require replacement.
The car’s last MOT test was conducted on 26 October 2021 at an indicated 81,043 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories.
This vehicle is now believed to be exempt from mandatory MOT testing due to its age.
SERVICE HISTORY
In July 2023, technicians at PJK Classics replaced the distributor cap and fuel filter, removed water from both fuel tanks, stripped, dried and rebuilt the carburettors, removed water from the boot, and blew out the air filters, as well as replacing the water pump and gasket, fitting all new spark plugs, renewing the coolant, fitting new Stromberg rubber and copper oil seals, tuned the carburettors, and fitting new HT leads.
Further work carried out during this maintenance includes: heavy rust being removed from the driver and passenger footwells and toe-boards, surface corrosion being treated with Rust Converter, the underside being Waxoyled, a GRP temporary waterproof repair, new Bitumen sound deadening, and new firewall foams being fitted.
An engine oil and filter service was performed in July 2022 by I.K Classics.
The vendor reports that it has recently completed a 500-mile classic road rally without issue.
The vendor also reports that significant mechanical, suspension, and welding work has been carried out in recent years.
